The Scientists of Pioneer 1 and 2, whether working on their own, or for the government, tend to be a major plot-catalyst. From the initial discovery of Dark Falz, to the creation of De Rol Le, scientists are involved.

Sonic Team's general distrust for Science also appears through the way most of them are portrayed. In PSO, the true "bad guy" may not have been some cosmic force or evil entity at all...

Dr. Osto Hyle
AKA:
Civillian
Relations:
Occupation: Lead Researcher
Special Powers: Total genius insanity
Affiliations: Pioneer1 science lab
Enemies: Heathcliff Flowen

Osto Hyle is partially responsible for the creation of the monster De Rol Le also known as Beta 722. Once Pioneer 1 landed, Dr. Osto and his team of scientists created a new life form. Why they did this is unknown. De Rol Le started out as a small arthropod like animal, that grew at an amazing rate. When the team attempted to move it, it escaped and killed 6 members of his team while injuring more. Dr. Osto himself did not die in the accident, but it is unclear whatever happened to him. Because Beta722 could both absorb traits of organisms it stabbed with its tentacles as well as mutate other life forms, it has a distinctly humanoid skull for armor. This is presumably the result of some poor stabbed lab assistant from Pioneer 1. The government tried to cover up the existence of Beta722 and the monsters it created in the caves.

GameCube Update

What is learned of Dr. Osto in Episode 2's plot is far more chilling then anything he was involved with previously. He not only experimented with creating the De Rol Le, but also with the Dark attribute from Falz. Unlike previously suspected, when the space ship was opened, Falz did not instantly rise up and obliterate every single person from Pioneer 1. It killed the initial teams, and wounded Heathcliff Flowen, but did nothing more. Dr. Osto was fascinated with Flowens' wounds, and used the residue of Falz to create various monsters, in hopes of making a super powerful bio-weapon for use by the military. Unfortunatly, all of his experiments went awry, causing the new monsters found in the SeaBed labratory. The evil Dr. got the dieing Flowen to pledge his body to science, in return for his last requests. One of which was to stop Pioneer 2 from coming to Ragol. Naturally, the Dr. and the Government/military went back on their word, but only once Flowen was too badly damaged and experimented upon to do anything about it. Dr. Osto merged Flowen with the remaining unaffected AI from Pioneer 1, Olga, in hopes of being able to maintain control over him as a weapon. It failed, and the deadly hybrid Olga Flow was created. Hopefully, it managed to kill Dr. Osto.

Dr. Jean Carlo Montague
AKA:
FOnewm: Yellow/red
Relations: Elenor Camuel, person he created.
Occupation: Biotechnology scientist, blacksmith,
Special Powers: The ability to create weapons from enemy ARM items
Affiliations: Pioneer2 science lab
Enemies: His Government soldier guard

A Force and a blacksmith, Jean Carlo Montague is hailed as a genius on board Pioneer 2, and he knows it. Confident, arrogant and talented, he steps up to any challenging project. Dr. Montague’s most notable creation is Elenor Camuel, a RAcaseal. He calls her his masterpiece and seems to like her well. Their relationship is not clear. Doc and Elenor received their mags at the same time. Their mags were twins. Dr. Montague’s main research seems to be the effects of photon energy on the variety of life forms found on Ragol. He does not disclose the details of much of his research to either you or Elenor. Or his guard, who doesn’t like him because Dr. Montague doesn’t particularly want to be guarded. Dr. Montague is not afraid to work outside of the boundaries of the council or government if he thinks it will help people. Doc’s special power is to create enemy weapons by altering various ARM items which you can occasionally chop off of an enemy. The items he can use are Pan Arms, Sinow Beat, Chaos Bringer and Delsaber. In Ultimate mode online, Dr. Montague will create enemy ARM items from Parts of Baranz, Dark Belra, and Sinow Red.

Elenor Camuel
AKA: Y-N11017
RAcaseal-Pink
Relations: Dr. Jean Carlo Montague, creator.
Occupation: Personal Assistant, lab worker
Special Powers: Ability to speak to mags.
Affiliations: Dr. Montague’s lab
Enemies: A soldier (why?)

You first meet the friendly Elenor during the quest ‘Magnitude of Metal’. She appears throughout the game, and you are paired with her again for the quest ‘Docs Secret Plan’. Elenor is one of the friendliest and most helpful NPCs in the game. She equips a decently powerful weapon each time you meet her, and is able to hold her own in most fights. She prefers rifles and shot style weapons. She works with Dr. Montague and Simons Olo a civilian/council at a science lab. Depending on the number of labs aboard Pioneer2, she may also work with Alicia Baz and her civilian lab partner, as well as Mome and his two co-workers. Aside from running errands, she also performs missions as a hunter for the lab and Dr. Montague. Her most intriguing mission is ‘Secret Delivery’. You are hired to save Elenor by giving her an energy pack, as she has gone to the caves on assignment from Simons Olo and run out of power. In this quest, you can also find two white RAcasts, Type:O, and Type:W, they are contained in energy bonds and apparently in wait mode. Unlike other androids present in the game, they do not act like people. They wait for one of three commands from you. ‘Cancel’ does nothing. Tell them Elenor’s alias, and they will reveal a bit about their mission. They were all collecting bio-data on the Caves animals. Because they are in containment, communication is not available with Elenor. Tell them the wrong command, the number found on the energy pack, and they will attack you. When you defeat them and leave the room, they leave as well. It is notable, that there is one empty containment unit. What are the units for, and who belongs in the empty one? Due to the suspicious nature of Simons Olo, the mission may not have been exactly legal/appropriate. Elenor is Dr. Montague’s most sophisticated creation. She has emotions of her own and recognizes them in other things (mags), although her mental state is still experimented on by Doctor Montague. The relationship she shares with Dr. Montague is not clear.

Alicia Baz
AKA:
FOmarl: Yellow/blue hair
Relations:
Occupation: Science lab researcher, large mammal studies
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Government science lab
Enemies:

Alicia Baz hires you to first take data on native animals in the forest and then hires you again to help her take the same data. She has an expertise in the study of large mammals and animal behavior in general. The lab she is working at is protected by soldiers, and very secretive. They are working on a mission or a study that they don’t want anyone finding out about, so information on the quest is scarce. After you bring back the results from the capsules to Alicia, she quits her job at the lab to take the data herself, as she doesn’t believe the strange results. She finds that the gene pool has somehow been altered for all the forest animals. This has turned all the formerly friendly animals mean, and unproductive. (always attacking things, not caring for young) Her civilian partner assumes she quit because of the controversial policy of hiring hunters to help with scientific work. She equips a rather weak club style force weapon, but prefers to cast varieties of Barta which are far more useful. The genetic alteration could be the result of either Fallz, Beta722 or something completely unknown.

Alicia is an orphan because her parents were killed in the war on Coral. She was saved by Heathcliff Flowen, who adopted her as his daughter. He tells her that she is just like a daughter to him, but she does not believe him. When the military commands Flowen to go on P1, he tells his friend Donoph Baz to take care of her. (Who's last name she took) she likes Flowen a lot, and so follows him on the P2 as a lab worker. Donoph, her protector comes along. She quit because she didn't agree with their methods. Now having lost both Donoph and Flowen, she works with Bernie.

Dr. Gulls
AKA: Rag Rappy
Civilian
Relations:
Occupation: Field researcher, lab worker
Special Powers: Owning an excellent Rag Rappy suit
Affiliations: Science lab
Enemies:

Dr. Gulls’ assistant hires you to find him after he disappears from the lab. He bought black market data sheets from the FOnewm Hopkins (mark two) on Rag Rappies. His interest was so great that he built a very clever Rappy suit and managed to fit into it, sneak down through the restricted access transporter and then move into Rappy society. Although the altered Rappies will attack you, they leave the disguised doctor alone, and he is able to comfortably live among them. If you talk to him enough times, he’ll reveal himself and end his mission to find out first hand what the Rag Rappies are like. Dr. Gulls returns to his lab with a much greater understanding of an animal he really likes, and everyone is happy.

Simons Olo
AKA:
Civillian
Relations:
Occupation: Science lab worker
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Works at Doc’s lab
Enemies:

Simons Olo hires you to give Elenor an energy pack in the quest ‘Secret Delivery’. He is not outwardly malicious, but he is subtly up to no-good. He only refers to Elenor by her alias number and does not seem to care about her well-being. He sends her on a quest to the caves that is probably not approved by the Doc, or perhaps even the lab itself. He does not want anyone to find out what has happened to Elenor through his actions. He hires you in desperation, not so much that he cares about her, but just so that no one will find out what he has done and he will be saved from being punished.

TYPE: O
AKA:
RAcast: White, sharp head, Whitill
Relations:
Occupation: Science lab worker
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Same lab that Dr. Montague works for
Enemies:

When you first meet Type-O, he is in a containment unit in ‘Secret Delivery’ Cave 1. You can attack and defeat him, or leave him there. No matter what you do, he will move very quickly once you leave him to appear in another containment unit in Cave 2. He was gathering data on the monsters in the caves, presumably for the science lab. Type-O does not act like a person, instead, he waits for your command in the containment unit. Tell him Eleanor’s alias, and he’ll tell you that communication with her is not available. Tell him the product number of the energy pack you are bringing for Eleanor, and he will become confused and try to attack you. He equips a variety of photon rifle. He later dies as Falz takes his body along with the HUmar Takuya in the quest “From the Depths”.

GameCube Update

If you choose to fight Type O and W in Secret delivery, after you defeat them, they will attempt to tell you something. "To unlock gate A in..." and "Gate B at..." There isn't anything new in the quest though, so this is presumeably an attempt to direct you in how to rescue Elenor, as 3 gates block your path to her.

TYPE: W
AKA:
RAcast: White with orange, sharp head, Oran
Relations:
Occupation: Science lab worker
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Same lab that Dr. Montague works for
Enemies:

When you first meet Type:W, he is in a containment unit in ‘Secret Delivery’. You can attack and defeat him, or leave him there. Type: W acts like a stronger, and harder to defeat edition of Type:O. He equips a shotgun style weapon, and several health items, meaning he can take much more damage then Type:O. His ATP is also higher, as he can always injure you more if his hits connect. The commands you choose work the same for this android as well. For some reason, you cannot cast Ryuker anywhere near either Type:O or Type:W. It is not known what becomes of Type:W.

Mome
AKA: “Aargh, I hate you!”
RAmar: white, helmet. Also a civilian
Relations:
Occupation: Scientist
Special Powers: Excellent ability to die
Affiliations: Group of three scientists
Enemies:

Mome, after viewing Dr. Osto’s notes, decides he wants to further observe the renegade life form that Dr. Osto created. He says he hires you to help him find the creature so he can study it, but Mome actually hires you to be a sort of body guard in the mines because anyone can stumble onto a De Rol Le, it’s living through the encounter that provides the problem. Especially for wimpy little scientists who like to equip handguns. Mome is probably the most difficult NPC in the game, not because of his aggressiveness, but because of the fact that he is the only one in the game that you have to fight a boss with. The other NPCs try to provide as much aid as they can so that their quests will be successful. Mome tends to try to watch out for himself at best, which usually doesn’t work. Being a scientist, he has very poor ATP and ATA, and can only equip a bad grade of handgun. Being with Mome is almost exactly like fighting by yourself, but with the liability of a second target to both defend and heal. The encounter with the De Rol Le, frightens Mome, but provides him with a cell sample. He realizes that the job of analyzing the cell is too difficult for his team, and decides to give it to Dr. Montague to study.

GameCube Update

At least in Normal Mode, Mome becomes so frightened of the De Rol Le, that he decides to play dead on the floor of the raft through your fight with it. Interestingly enough, the De Rol actually falls for his possum act, and will not attack him as he lays in the center of the raft. It does not appear that you have to do anything to protect him from attacks during the fight. He remains just as poor in the rest of the level, but because of his trick at the boss, this makes his quest far eaiser.

Mr. Graves
AKA:
Civillian
Relations: Matha-daughter
Occupation: Biologist
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Dr. Ostos’ research team
Enemies:

Mr. Graves was probably working on something like Beta 722 when Blant last saw him. The work he was doing made Blant question the true purpose of the Pioneer project although he could not fully understand it. Although their work was supposed to be kept secret, and kept them very busy, Mr. Graves showed Blant his monitor once. Mr. Graves did not die in the Beta722 incident, he met the same fate as everyone else from Pioneer 1.

GameCube Update

It is revealed that Mr. Graves was a photon engineer aboard Pioneer 1. He worked closely with Dr. Osto and was probably responsible for much distruction and mutations. Not only did these two scientists create the mutant De Rol Le, which in turn mutated all of the (A. Beast) caves creatures, but they also experimented with the Dark attribute from Falz, creating such horrors as the Dimenians and Deldepths, and later something far worse.

Mrs. Graves
AKA:
Civillian
Relations: Matha-daughter
Occupation: Physicist
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies:

Not much is said about Mrs. Graves, except that she is kept very busy and secretive by the government and does not have time to care for her child. It can be assumed that she met the same fate as everyone on Pioneer 1.
