Many people say that PSO does not have a plot. They are incorrect, it does indeed have one, it's just rather difficult to find. The plot is revealed through the characters and their actions. This guide covers every general NPC that is signifigant to the game's plot. Sometimes, a simple write up is not enough for a character who was the sole feature of a special quest. They can be found in the Special Quest area. This guide is SPOILER HEAVY in ALL AREAS. Newer NPCs are closer to the bottom. NPC guides created by me and Niu Balkrye. Use the buttons for specific NPCs, as this is just a general area.

Navi helped with the NPC guide by adding in information from the official JP PSO Art Book. All information found in the book is color coded with this reddish brown color.

Guide:

Ash
AKA:
HUmar: Orange/brown
Relations: Zidd, cousin
Occupation: Hunter
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies:

You first meet Ash during the quest ‘Battle Training’. He appears only one other time during the game, in the ruins quest ‘From the Depths’ Ash is friendly, but has a lot of pride. He does not like to loose, although his skills are not that great. He is the most aggressive of the NPCs, actively seeking out monsters when they get too close. This makes him difficult to protect in hard and v-hard/ult. He takes you as his role model, and tries very hard to become the best hunter he can be. After his loss in the first mission, he chooses to endure the pain of his injuries from the Savage Wolves rather then be healed. When Kireek later challenges him, he looses and is upset. Ash equips a saber or one of the varieties of Double Saber.

Garon OR Gallon
AKA:
Civillian
Relations:
Occupation: Trader
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies: Dacci, ‘Cranky HUnewearl’

Garon is an untrustworthy and possibly unfair trader who hires you to retrieve the mags that Dacci lost. No one really likes Garon, probably due to his lack of credibility and bad trading practices. The mags were a part of a money-making scheme he had.

GameCube Update

Gallon, the greedy merchant of Episode 2, is probably a type-o of this same character. In Japanese, they sometimes mix up "L" and "R", and the man even looks the same as the guy who hired you to find the extra mags. He runs a secret shop in episode 2, where you can wrap items (anything) and it turns into a fancy looking item box "gift" which can then be used to reveal the original item. He also sells disks which play music when used. You can buy his items with meseta, or play minigames at his various machines to earn "Gallon Points" which can be used for purchases.

Baby Hildebear
AKA:
Hildebear
Relations: Neglectful parents
Occupation: Monster
Special Powers: To cause Moon Atomizers
Affiliations:
Enemies:

You meet the baby hildebear in the quest ‘Forrest of Sorrow’. It looks almost exactly like the giant hildebears, except it is small and non-aggressive. “Owwuuuu” is the only thing it will say when spoken to. It is possible that it later died in the game, as while it remained unaffected by the influence of Falz, its parents were, and they stopped feeding it. It is never known if it lives or not. The baby hildebear is notable however, because it is the only character in the entire game that will willingly give you an item without you ever having to bring it anything, or do anything for it. If you can find it again after you finish the quest (appears somewhere else in Forrest2) it will cause a Moon Atomizer to spontaneously appear on the ground as a ‘twinkle’. There doesn’t seem to be anything special about the Moon Atomizer it causes to appear.

Racton
AKA:
HUmar: Brown, Mohawk
Relations: Son
Occupation: possibly a builder
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies: ‘Cranky HUnewearl’, ‘Red Spike-head’

The greedy Racton goes to Ragol in an attempt to stake out land before it is cleared of monsters. While trying to get an early start on a get-rich-scheme or prime building space, he becomes trapped by enemies in the forest. His son hires you to go and rescue him when he does not return to the ship. Racton’s greed is the only thing that is more powerful then his fear, as he commands you to go find the stake-claiming capsules he has placed on land he wants before he will return to the ship. He risks his life over his expensive capsules as he waits with the possibility of attacking monsters for you to go and find them. When he is safely on the ship, his determination returns as he swears to go back to the planet as soon as some one else does all the dirty work by clearing out the monsters.

Son of Racton
AKA:
Civilian
Relations: Racton-father
Occupation
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies:

Racton’s Son hires you to go and find his father who went down to Ragol to stake out land before all the monsters were killed. His father becomes trapped by monsters and is unable to return to the ship. When you rescue Racton, his son promises to keep him out of trouble. While Racton is greedy, his son is kind.

DACCI
AKA:
RAmar: Gray/white/helmet
Relations:
Occupation: Ranger
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies: Garon the trader

Dacci is first hired by Garon the trader to get back mags from deceased hunters, or to randomly find them on the ground. He manages to gather quite a few, but Eleanor comes along, and they decide they like her better and leave him. Dacci fails his quest and Garon the trader starts to hate him. You take over where he left off in the quest ‘Magnitude of Metal’. Dacci also takes the quest ‘The Gran Squall’, but doesn’t find out much information. On this quest he meets Great Sword Zoke (The man in black), who did not take the quest, but investigated it before anyone got there for other reasons. He will accuse you of trying to monopolize the money from the quest, or reveal that nobody really knows anything about what’s going on. He equips a handgun. His possible partner from the quest may be Gizele the HUmar. Dacci later dies as Falz first possesses him, and then takes his body in the quest ‘From the Depths’.

Nol Rinale
AKA:
HUnewearl/civilian: Blue/white, tan hair
Relations:
Occupation: Journalist
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Pioneer 2 Online News
Enemies:

Nol hires you in the quest ‘Journalistic Pursuit’ to protect her as she seeks the truth about what happened down on Ragol. Although she looks like a HUnewearl, Nol is really a civilian in a disguise. She equips a variety of handgun and uses no spells. She enters the restricted Hunter-Only area of the ship and hires you to sneak her to the teleporter. Nol agrees with Rico that the government is far less then trustworthy when it comes to telling the population important information. She just wants the opportunity to let the people of Pioneer 2 know the truth and stop all the rumors. After she finds out what Ragol is really like, she uses her own judgment to not publish the story. She is very afraid of what she sees and feels it will be better for the people of the ship to NOT know what is really going on until the hunters can get better control of the monsters and things.

Game Cube Update
In Episode 2, you finally get to see Nol in her civillian clothes. She appears in quests of a more 'light hearted' nature, and in areas where you need to learn something. She created the infamous Typing Quest, which was released to the USA at a point when there wasn't much hope of anyone having a keyboard outside of Japan. She also really loves her Game Boy Advance, and will share her special games with you for free! (Which as of now include PuyoPuyo and ChuChu Puzzle, to which she is addicted) There is also a NiGHTS minigame now made available. Also provided you have the GC-GBA link cable, and can do her little challenges.

Bernie
AKA: Bernie is not his real name
RAmar: Blue/tan hair
Relations:
Occupation:
Special Powers: The Knack
Affiliations: The military, Great Sword Zoke
Enemies:

You first meet Bernie during the quest ‘The Gran Squall’. He is required to open a door in the level by using his special power of ‘The Knack’. When you speak to him, you learn that he knows the most about the mission out of everyone else in it. He is working with Great Sword Zoke on a separate quest that has something to do with either the ship or Rupika. From Bernie you learn that The Gran Squall wasn’t really a cruise ship, but a secret military vessel. The government launched the ship before first contact with the planet for unknown reasons, and it most likely crashed when Fallz appeared as Pioneer 2 and the Central Dome made first contact. The only survivor from the military ship is Rupika, a FOnewearl. The military had a chip implanted in her for an unknown reason. Bernie has a device, most likely given to him by the military, which can be used to track the signal from the chip. The military didn’t want anyone to know that they crashed their ship, and hires a fake civilian to pretend to be from a false travel agency as a front through which to hire hunters as aid. You meet Bernie several other times during the game, as he goes on different missions. Bernie always equips the special weapon Flame Visit and prefers to use a fairly powerful form of Foie. On difficulties VH and Ult, he'll use the Burning Visit, made available on GCPSO. Bernie’s final mission, leaves him near death in ‘Seek My Master’. Bernie goes with Great Sword Zoke on whatever quest brought Zoke into the ruins. He was too weak to help Zoke, and collapses in the hall before the difficult room that kills Zoke. You see him in the later quest "The Retired Hunter".

Rupika
AKA:
FOnewearl: Purple, blue hair
Relations:
Occupation: Military employee
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies:

Rupika is the girl you rescue from the crashed military ship, The Gran Squall. Why the military employed a little girl, and why she is the only survivor of the mission/crash is unclear--at this time. Rupika has a chip implanted in her for tracking that Bernie is able to detect. Great Sword Zoke also has an interest in Rupika, although he did not find her or save her although he was in the area of the mission before you. Bernie will report what you have found to him. Bernie takes Rupika to the fake travel agency civilian man to be ‘taken care of’. She does not appear again until Blue Burst....More about Rupika?

Rico Tyrell
AKA: Red Ring Rico
HUmarl, unique costume
Relations: Principal Tyrell-father
Occupation: Hunter, Scientist
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Pioneer 1 lab
Enemies:

While you never actually get to meet and speak to Rico, you get to know her through her various message capsules. If you do not choose to take a quest, and just use the main transport to go to Ragol, you find her message capsules. In her messages she gives you various tips about the animals and monsters she meets, the mysterious columns you occasionally find, and general commentary on the government, mysteries, and in the end, her own life. Rico is a fast thinker and a good scientist. She figures out the purpose of the columns, and translates the crystals in the ruins. She seems pleasant enough, and is called a hero by people from both Pioneer 1 and 2. Rico wanted to get to the bottom of the mystery of the disaster, and using her skills, she does. While you think you are journeying through the game to go and save Rico, you are actually going to kill her. The whole mission of Dark Falz is to find the perfect body to inhabit in order to…be…evil and kill things. The real purpose of Falz isn’t really revealed, just that Falz isn’t anything good, and to let it out would be even worse. Because of Rico's power and skill, it chooses her to be its physical form, and she is what you see a very mutated form of when you fight Falz. Although Falz doesn’t really look like anything in any of its forms it has an unmistakable human head/torso/arms piece growing from one of the forms--this is all that is left of Rico's original body. You can still see her Red Ring on her left wrist if you look closely enough.

Principal Tyrell
AKA:
Government Officer
Relations: Rico Tyrell-daughter
Occupation: Head of Pioneer 2
Special Powers:
Affiliations: Government/Hunters Organization
Enemies:

Principal Tyrell is who you report to after completing each area on Ragol. He is the ‘president’ /Governer General of Pioneer 2, and needs to be kept informed of everything that is going on at the planet’s surface. He is a widower, and a high ranking officer from Coral. Although he won’t admit it out right, he is very worried for his daughter Rico, but doesn’t want to let it interfere with his job as Principal. He offers bits of commentary on what you have reported, and mostly tells you to ‘keep investigating’. You are never able to report to him that you have killed his daughter, the NPCs sort of ‘reset’ when you beat the game.

Irene
AKA:
Civillian
Relations:
Occupation: Principal Tyrell’s secretary
Special Powers:
Affiliations: The government
Enemies:

Irene is Principal Tyrell’s personal secretary who appears twice in the game. She can always be found standing at her own desk, right next to his, and hires you once in the quest ‘From the Depths’. She cares a lot about Principal Tyrell and will personally ask you to find Rico, since the principal will not do it himself. She also appears in online quests ocaisonally, and seems to be attracted to both males and females regardless of species, and if they are alive or not. The way her dialogue is written, makes it seem sort of like she is 'hitting on' the player.

Kroe Waynes
AKA:
HUnewearl: white, green hair
Relations: Anna Waynes- twin sister
Occupation:
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies:

Kroe is a clever HUnewearl that you meet twice in the game. The source of her problems, and later yours, are her sister, Anna. Anna is seduced by someone in the Black Paper organization. Kroe and Anna’s parents both died when they were young, and did not take enough time to give Anna proper instructions on how to be good. Kroe tries to be the responsible one and take care of both Anna and herself, although she knows that Anna can be a trouble maker. She hires you to find Anna after she is unable to do so herself in ‘Waterfall Tears’. After presumeably commanding Anna to stay home after her defeat at your hands, she pretends to be Anna in order to catch the person who helped turn Anna evil. In the quest ‘Black Paper’ she contacts you with a BEE message so that you can help her to arrest several members of Black Paper while she is in disguise. She always equips a type of slicer.

Cranky HUnewearl’
AKA:
HUnewearl: Pale Tan Skin, hot pink spiky hair
Relations:
Occupation:
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies: Garon, Racton, Albert

The Cranky HUnewearl only appears on board Pioneer 2. She never has much good to say about anyone. Although she is not willing to kill Garon herself out right, she is willing to let others do it, as she leaves him in the forest, running from monsters, and does not even bother to tell any of the authorities. She complains about Hopkins online, gossips about Cecil's husband and is generally mean-spirited.

Matha Graves
AKA:
FOmarl: Red Dress, Pale pink hair
Relations: Mother, father, both deceased, Daughter Viviana Graves (Ep3)
Occupation:
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies:

Matha hires you to find her missing butler, Blant in the quest ‘The Graves’ Butler’. Because Mathas’ parents were too busy to raise her, she was raised by Blant. Blant disobeyed her parent’s orders and brought her onto pioneer 2. As you progress through her quest, you find various messages from Blant that detail the things he knew about her parents, and how he was going to find them for her. You eventually discover that Blant has died, along with her parents. Perhaps Blant is not as kind as he seems, if he would risk himself, the only thing Matha had left, to find her absent parents. Matha grows up in the space of time between ep2 and ep3 and has a daughter, Viviana.

Blant
AKA:
RAmar: never seen
Relations:
Occupation: Ranger, butler
Special Powers:
Affiliations: The Graves Family
Enemies:

Blant, although he has great skill as a ranger, works as a butler for the Graves family. Although they hired him as a butler, Blant serves them as more then just that, he is like a second father to their daughter Matha. The Graves work as scientists for the government and are too busy to pay any attention to their unfortunate offspring. Blant raises Matha instead, and loves her very much. Mr. and Mrs. Graves are onboard Pioneer 1 as researchers and command Blant not to let Matha get on Pioneer 2, creating a possible plot-hole. Why stay on a planet that is ‘tearing itself apart’ in order to be safe? Blant disobeys the order and goes with Matha on Pioneer 2. He later goes to the surface of Ragol to search for Mathas’ parents in the Caves. He fights monsters and leaves capsules of recorded information as he goes. The capsules explain what he is doing, and hint that Mr. and Mrs. Graves could have been working on De Rol Le. Blant is very kind and honest toward Matha in his messages and truly only wants the best for her. Although he wears lots of protection, Blant dies in the caves after leaving one last message.

Lionel
AKA:
HUcast: yellow
Relations:
Occupation:
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies: Probably Hildebears, as he got eaten.

Lionel is in very serious trouble when he hires you in the quest ‘Lionels Letter’. Poor Lionel has been dismembered by monsters and is currently scattered over the forest and the caves. Fortunately, he has enough energy left in just his head to call someone for help. If you pick up his head, it will speak to you and try to tell you where the rest of his parts are, by using the wireless communication he is still capable of with his various limbs. Unfortunately, a hildebear has eaten part of him, and the unscrupulous member of black paper Doronbo has stolen his torso. His head eventually runs out of power and he breaks down, unable to help you further. If you find all of him, you can frighten Doronbo into dropping the torso on the ship and running off. Lionel also appears in the quest "Central Dome Fire Swirl", as one of the people you have to rescue.

Elly Person
AKA:
FOnewearl: red, black, bandanna
Relations:
Occupation:
Special Powers:
Affiliations:
Enemies:

Elly Person hires you to help her find her friend who was onboard Pioneer 1. Although she has never seen him, they had their relationship through BEE, the voice/e-mail system of Ragol. Elly and Callus exchange messages as you travel throughout the mines searching for him. The messages are broken at first, but then encourage you to come and find him. Elly is in for a surprise when she finally meets Callus, as he is a computer. He explains how he really does like her, and that he always wanted to meet her. Elly is very sad as he must shut himself down to avoid being corrupted by whatever is causing the No Man’s Mines to malfunction and try to kill people. Elly is able to remain hopeful, as she makes a backup of Callus so that he can be brought back when everything is safe. See also Elly Person Episode 2 and Seat of the Heart

Ozwald
AKA
Civillian
Relations: A wife
Occupation: Blacksmith
Special Powers: Use minerals to create weapons
Affiliations:
Enemies:

You meet Ozwald when you take the quest "Soul of a Blacksmith". He has learned that there are new and different minerals on Ragol, and wants to make a weapon with them. However, because he is a civillian he doesn't have permission to go down, so he hires you. He wants a sample of Miwontite, a dragons' tooth, and a third unknown substance. He provides you with a helpful list and even offers the weapon to you once it is completed. The final mineral is up to you to choose, and that decides the attribute type that he will apply to the weapon. All Ozwald really wants is to experiment with the new minerals of Ragol, and dosn't really care about the value of the resulting weapon. His small wife knows how exciteable he is when it comes to new things. When you bring him the minerals and tooth (why a tooth?) he will give you a fair quality weapon. It was rumored that in the JP version of the quest, you could get a special weapon.
